Last Bits of Paper Work

My Gantt chart shows in green the time I set aside for work, focusing mainly on the production and post production of my film.. The red bars are the time it really took my. As you can see some things took a little longer then planned and others didn't. I finished about half a week after planned.

For my business card I decided to use my pigeon from y film, I thought that if we where giving them out at the degree show it would have to fit in with the film so people could recognize them.

In this first one I thought the pigeon was maybe a little to bold so I just moved the opacity down.

I used my flour sack from 2nd year for this card, this it so it would match my CV. I decided to do this as when I leave and I'm handing out show-reels it would be better for everything to match.

Posters

Posters. In the end I ended up with two posters one by Bron and another by Cat. I had asked Cat to make me a poster weeks before but just got it days before deadline. I needed the poster earlier as i had wanted to use it as my title screen for my film. So as time ticked by and they was no sign of a poster I asked Bron if she needed any more hours and got myself a title page. But I was so impressed with the poster Bron created I wanted to make it my main poster.

This Poster didn't really have what I was looking for. I was wanting a 1950's style dramatic, over the top, painted style with a bold brash front.

But Kat did come over and ask what things I would like her to change, I told her that I didn't like the floating pigeon and that I didn't like the colour of the font, I wasn't it to be bold and brash. This is what I got:

I think this one is much better.

Editing and Shake

After I had finished animating I had a lot of editing to do. One of the big things I needed doing was to make the arrow move. I got Natasha to help me with this. We used shake. Natasha also created the smoke and grain falling in shake and the pigeon droping and seagull diving. Natasha was a great help and it was a very long hard day at a computer. She helped me to get out what I was wanting into my peice.
Here is a couple of sence completed in shake:

In this one we moved the arrow in shake. All the seagull and pigeon movement was done using stop motion before hand.

In this one we also moved the arrow in shake. We found it hard to make the end of the arrow go behind the centre part of the gage. It was all about layering, we had to make another centre part of the gage to layer on top.

I had the edit a lot of blemish out of my work like shadows and the edge of the card, I did it all on photoshop.

This was done on photoshop by taking a blank frame of the sky and stretching it so there wasn't the joining line on it then dragging the original frame in making it another layer and cutting the seagull out.

Group Work

For my group work Im doing a seven second animation for Jo's peice, this is when her character goes though the door and has turned from a 2d drawing into the stopmotion model. I had to make the model, Jo gave me the caractors turn around, which I then added a armiture to. I made the armiture out of Balsa wook and aluminuim wire, which I then shaped. I then covered in purple modeling clay. The set is just green screen as the film has a black background, we decided to get the best effect would be to be able to key my background out so Jo could add the same background as the rest of the film.

I am also inking Brons 2d frames. This consists of drawing around each frame with black pen then rubbing out the pencil lines.

I would animated Jo's section then show would I'd done to to Jo. Here is the first test and second test:

Jo like them, but she wanted the man to go react more, to freak out more. So I animated it again. Here's test number three:

This time Jo's wanted the man to have more of a run off and to freak out more, I did find it hard to visualize what Jo wanted and I was also finding it hard to animate with the model. I found that because the model was very tall, with just wire for legs he didn't like standing up on one leg, even with magnets on his feet. To over come this I had to rig him up. Here is test number four:

This time he side sets in, and freaks out, Jo like this one, but she wanted the man to be looking up when running out not looking at the floor like in this shot. So I did it again, test Five:

Jo like this one the most, so all I had to do was edit the background out and turn it black then layer the door on. During editing I found that the man didn't step out the door far enough, so when he put his arms in the air it would disappear behind the door. All I did to over come this was when the man stepped thought the door I moved him on photoshop over to the right a little more so that wouldn't happen. Heres the final shot:

I also did some 2d clean up for Jo's project. Rubbing out pencil lines and tiding up on photoshop.

Animating my film

With all my models, props and set build I started to animate my film. My film was broken up into which sets I would use, how hard the shot was going to be and if I would need Ashley help animating it or not. Ashley used up some of her hours working on my film, because I had so many charactors in some sences I would need a extra pair of hands to animate.
The first shot I did was the close up of the Robots head, this was a very easy shot to do and it concised of taking one picture the rest was to be done later on After effects or shake to get the arrow to move.
The next shot I did was some more stills of the far away set, I just wanted to do some test and see what is would look like, as I was going to have a meeting with Sean later that week I wanted to show him what it would look like.
I also did a test of the Main Pigeon walking.
After meeting up to go over some of my early animation with Sean. He said that it was hard to tell the differance between the grain and the gravel floor, I took this on board and after looking at stopmotion television shows like Bob the Builder and Pingu I decinded to go for a much simplar set. The path the hills became just chalk on card. Everything else like the Robot and the sky was left the same.

Having to changed the gravel floor was kind of a bless in disguse, I was finding it a pain to animate with the gravel as it was always moving and getting stuck into the pigeons feet. I spent half my time sorting out the pigeons feet before I could start the next shot.
Animating was going smooth, people didn't really notice the change in sets, like from small pigeons to big pigeons which was great. I found it hard to animate the smaller pigeon because they couldn't move much I want screen time down to a minuman with them, but they had to be some long shots.
I enjoyed working with Ashley, she helped me alot, she brought a fresh pair of eyes and could see things I couldn't see, althought sometimes a though she was to ruff with my models, but I think that was me just getting over protective.
I found the seagull to be the worse thing to animate, everything else move nicely and did what I wanted it to do, but not the seagull. I think when making it I was itching to start animating and rushed him. He didn't really turn out like designed and I found him bulky. Lucking he wasn't in many shots. I had some shots where the seagull was in the sky, here he had to be rigged up. When rigging up a model I used thin fishing wire the a medal frame, rigging is hard and you have to be patient. When you use wire the model takes a long time to settle after you move it so you've got to wait each time or you get a blared picture. I found that out the hard time more then once.

I put this shot in because it shows me working with Ashley and with the seagull.

So sence where I would have needed a rig like the pigeon falling off the bench and the seagull driving I decided that this would be easier to do on after effect or shake.
It took me about a month to animate.

Sound Effects

Sean had managed to get us time in the media building and in the sound booths so we could make our sound effects. We where tourt how to use the basic of Cubebase and rocording equipment. I worked with Bron and Jo to make sound effects and music for all three of our films.
I took to understand Cubebase more then the others so I did all the technial things like the seting up of cannels and the recording. Firstly we worked on Jo's, her peice is set out of this world so she wanted other worldly music, and not really any sound effect as her peice is set in space they wouldn't be any. We created her music by using the MIDI keyboard, this meant we could get any sound we really wanted and warp it and tune it in Cubebase. We brought up I copy of Jo's animatic and Bron played along to what she saw. I recorded it.
The next week we all worked on Brons sounds, she wanted the sound of a drum kit falling down so we all had great fun hitting things and recording them and layering them up to make the sound required. I had the great honer of being the scraping noise Bron needed as we record me being draged across the room sat on a chair. I also played the drum for Bron peice. This was because I new some one who is doing muisc tec at uni so has all the recrding equirment and plays the drums.
We then got onto recording sounds for my peice. A lot of the bird noises where found on BBC sound CD's but we had some fun recording the pecking and pigeon walking noise. I had took in some gravel and we used different things to try and get different pecking sounds, even chop sticks at one point.

Model and Set Making

After going thought my storyboards with Tandy I decided to cut down on the amount of pigeons I was going to have in my film. I cut it down to three pigeons instead of five.
I made these pigeons out of Balsa wood and aluminum wire, once they where glued into shape I shaped the wood, smoothed off the corners and made them more rounder. After that I covered them with tights and stuffed them. I use tights because its very stretchy, and just normal stuffing. When I got the pigeon shape I was looking for I covered the models in gray material, sewing it together, leaving the feet and beck on show. The feet the beck where cover in modeling clay, the eyes where added last, also using modeling clay.

The Seagull was made in the same way.

Once these where all made I moved into making my sets, this way I could get the right proportions from model to set. Doing this I found out that my Robot was going to be huge,compared with my work area. To get around this I decided to make I smaller scale set, which would be of the Robot on the park bench with little pigeons.
These little pigeons where also make on wire and wood, but they didn't have as much move ability as the bigger one, but this should work out alright for long shots.

My set where made using a base on MDF, I got a packet of fish gravel and made a path, used green material for the hills, the bench was made of wood, as was the robot, and as the robot didn't move he was made a solid model. His clothes where made of black material, which just covered the wooden skeleton.

The grain tray was made by painting some of the fish gravel yellow and sticking some of it onto the MDF. The rest was left loose. I did this because I had left the places where the pigeons or seagull would stand just plain, the loose ones where to cover the gaps if they weren't on set.
Jo made me my sky backgrounds, these where just chalk on card.

Animatic

To make my animatic I took my story board frames and put them into final cut pro. Here is my first animatic:

As you can see it runs far to fast, I think this happened because I'd been watching it so many times. I learnt that I would have to get my friends to look it over and tell me where it needed to be slower and what didn't make sence. I also didn't really like the music choosen anymore, it was to redgmented and I had subcontily edited the animatic timings to the music.

This copy of my animatic has some early animation clips in. You can see the shots I cut out. Most of the long shots are just stills to show what the film would look like.

Armatures

All the pigeon armatures are going to be basically the same. All the main pigeon is going to have different is the quiff, which is going to be created by two bits of wire coming out of the top of it head.

There going to be made using Balsa wood and Aluminum wire, with feet big enough for tie downs. There going to be stuffed, using toy stuffing to there different shapes, eg. fat pigeon had more stuffing. One the outside there going to be dressed in light grey fabric, with black bands on there wings. beak, legs and feet to be made using modeling clay.

For the mini pigeon its going to be a solid block for body, head, tail and feet attached with wire. No wire wings, just fabric stuck on outside.

Seagull is also to be made with wire and wood, stuffed and dressed with white fabric, with grey on the wings and black on the tail. Beak and feet made with modeling clay.

Bombs, benches and set designs

I wanted the bomb to be instantly recognizable as a bomb, so I new I would have to go down the route of well known bombs.

I think I'm going to go with the dynamite because that recognizable and is an interesting shape so will drawn the eye.

The bench has to be something solid to hold the weight of the robot model and up to four birds. I had to have this in mind when designing.

I like the second bench design the best, but I think I will have to make the bars thicker.

Set design. I'm going to have to make three sets. One for one distance. Which will consist on a robot, bench, set on a path and surround with blue screen so I can add digital backgrounds later. This set will also need a set of little birds.

The next set will be of the robot sat on the bench, this will be for all the other shots, and made in such detail that when shooting it will look up to standard.

The last set will be on the bomb and robot leg, this will be for the shots of the pigeon while on the floor. The second set of pigeon will be made in ratio to the second and third set, making sure that the main pigeon can fit under the bench.

Time to design the robot

The robot went through different stages of development. At first it was going to be human looking, so the surprise at the end was that the robot was in face a robot, but as the story developed so did the designs.

I wanted the robot to have a human feel, so that the audience new it was a robot, but that pigeons couldn't tell. It also had to have a look of not being quite right, i bit like a clown.

The idea for it to have "pest control" written on it came at the beginning as well. So the audience new what the story was kinda about.

I didn't like the fist design (top on), I thought it was too simple, not really scary enough. It was then when I started to look at old tin toys. I really liked there hand painted look and the way they where put together. I tried to get this look into the next two designs.

As this was going on the story was still developing. I'd decided that the robot should have some type of gage to help build up tension.

So I designed different types of gages going with the arrow one because that would be easier to make and would look effective.

I also tried out different heads, to try and get the sinister feeling I was going for. In the end I've gone for this design (on the left), as a feel that gets the look and feel of a tin toy, and would look out of place sat in a park.

I started to design the Sea gull by doing real life drawing, like what I did with the Pigeon.

I found this helpful because I could get the shapes and proportions right of the bird.

In my animation the Sea gull is going to fly in, so I found it really helpful to see and draw a sea gull when it is in the air.

This helped when designing armatures.

I found it hard to design the Sea gull character, as it had to be more detailed then the pigeons, but still be in the same style.

Also this character is the "Bad Guy", is it had to have that type of look.

Pigeon Character Design

I wanted my Pigeon's to have a simple design, because i new i would have to make quite a lot of them.

My first design was these two pigeon on the left, but because of there big eyes it made them look to owl like, i liked the size of them though and that there where stood up right.

These next two Pigeons, the extreme fat and thin one's. Pigeons all looked the same so I had to find a way so that the audience wouldn't get confused one which character was which.

This Pigeon, the extreme fat one, was scraped because it's to extreme, and i thought that if I put extreme characters in it would be sending a different message in the story about greed in this cace.

The thin one apart from being way to tall and it would have been a job to get it to stand up, it also would be sending mixed messages.

The next two drawings are also a fat and thin pigeon. I had liked the idea of using this kid of think so you could tell the difference, but not going to the extremes. So i came up with these two, which i liked.

I also tried out drawing a girly pigeon, to see if that would work. I quite liked the out come. But if a put a girl in the story i believe I'd have to put some kind of love interested or Pigeons trying the impress her. Which i believe took away from the simplicity of the story.

The last two drawing's are of the main Pigeon, the little brave pigeon who try's to save the day. I had to make this one the most recognizable. That's why i gave him a tuffed of feathers on his head, or his quiff.

I think this gives him a more youthful look and helps him to stand out.

Now to design a Pigeon or two...

I started designing my Pigeons by doing some real life drawing and getting some images off the Internet to copy. I did this so i could get a real feel for how the Pigeon looks and the shape of it.

I found this helpful when it came to designing my Pigeons.

After doing these real life drawings I focused on wants under the skin of the Pigeon. I started to look at how they moved and flew. I looked at the insides the skeleton structure of the bird and wing.

Here is a drawing of the skeleton of a Pigeon and a wing. I found these drawings to be helpful when designing the armatures of my characters.

The drawings of the wings are of one (left side) folded up and the other (right side) folded out, with types of feathers labeled as well as the bones.

Pitch, Treatment, Plot points and Script...

Pitch

Pest control robot entices pigeons to an explosive end, with a little help from a seagull.

Treatment

A robot, with "property of pest control" badge on his jacket. Is trying to look human and not evil is sat on a park bench. In the robots hands is some birdseed. A pigeon lands and looks at the robot, it can tell that the robot isn’t right, but likes the look of the birdseed. Another pigeon lands and another. They talk to each other and push the first one forward to get some seed. The pigeon edges closer, with encouraging chants from the other pigeons behind. The robot bleeps when the pigeon touches the grill. The pigeon, spooked jumps back. The robot does nothing, the pigeon touches the grill and again the robot bleeps, but does nothing. The pigeon eats wearily. The others, seeing that nothings happened come to eat to greedily. The robot bleeps lots with the influx of birds and starts to light up. Just before it lights up all the way a seagull lands and it scatters the pigeons. The Robots light fades. The seagull starts to eat, scattering seed, the robot half-light up. The pigeons all but one jump back up and start eating. The pigeon that doesn’t jump up starts eating the scattered grain. The robots lights up fully and explodes taking all the pigeons with it. All but the one who’s eating the scattered grain. It jumps looks around, thinks it was him that had made the robot exploded and sweeps some of the fallen feathers under a leaf and hops off.

- Robots lights on chest start to rise as the pigeons eat.
- A seagull lands, pigeons jump off to get out of the way.
- Light fades on robot.
- Seagull eats scattering seed, robots light rises.
- Pigeons jump back on.
- One pigeons eats scattered seed away from robot.
- Light rises to full.
- Robot, seagull and pigeons explode.
- The one pigeon on floor jumps.
- Looks guilty and sweeps some of the falling feathers under a leaf.
- Pigeon hops away.

Script

EXT. PIGEON ONE ENTERS

PIGEON ONE hops onto screen from left to right. Pecking at the ground it hops along. Not really looking where it's going. He then hops into a foot. The foot has a SXF metallic clang. Cut to close up. Jumping the PIGEON ONE looks up. Cutting to a low angle long shot. To see a huge ROBOT sat on a park bench, with pest control stamped on its forehead.

EXT. PIGEON ONE SEEING GRAIN

PIGEON ONE see's resting on the robots knee's a tray with grain on. Shot in mid shot. Cut to POV of PIGEON ONE looking at grain.

EXT. PIGEON TWO AND THREE ENTER

Back to mid shot. PIGEON ONE is still stood there looking the robot up and down when PIGEON TWO and PIGEON THREE hop in, pecking. Cut to close up of PIGEON TWO and PIGEON Three’s excited reaction to seeing the grain.

EXT. PIGEON FOUR AND FIVE ENTER

Long shot of PIGEON TWO and PIGEON THREE hopping over to PIGEON ONE, who is still staring up at the ROBOT. PIGEON FOUR and PIGEON FIVE enter and also make there way to PIGEON ONE. Cut to mid shot of Pigeon’s ONE to FIVE stood in a group. PIGEON ONE keeps glancing back to the ROBOT. The Pigeon’s confers together. PIGEON TWO and PIGEON FIVE push PIGEON FOUR towards the ROBOT, who panics and rushes back to the group. Who are all laughing at him. Except PIGEON ONE who's walking over to the ROBOT.

EXT. PIGEON ONE GOES TO THE ROBOT

Cut to OS shot of PIGEON ONE walking over to ROBOT. Pigeon’s TWO to FIVE chanting in background. Cut to OS shot of ROBOT looming over PIGEON ONE who is now on the bench, just before the tray of grain. PIGEON TWO to FIVE in wide shot looking up at PIGEON ONE.

EXT. PIGEON ONE EATS THE GRAIN

Close up of PIGEON ONE looking down at the tray of grain. Cut to mid shot as PIGEON ONE steps onto tray. ROBOT’S gage twitches. Cut to long shot as PIGEON ONE jumps back off the tray, looking up at ROBOT. ROBOT doesn't move. PIGEON TWO to FIVE cower together. Cut to mid shot as PIGEON ONE steps cautiously back onto the tray. ROBOT’S gage twitches again. PIGEON ONE starts to peck.

EXT. ALL PIGEONS EAT

Mid shot of PIGEON TWO to FIVE seeing PIGEON ONE eating jump over each other towards ROBOT. Cut to Mid shot on ROBOT lap, PIGEON TWO to FIVE drive into the grain greedily. The ROBOT’S gage gets higher.

EXT. ENTER THE SEA GULL

Still in Mid Shot PIGEON ONE to FIVE eat messily. ROBOT’S gage still raising. They hear the call of SEA GULL (off frame), Pigeon’s stop and look up. SEA GULL swoops down coursing PIGEON THREE and FOUR to fall off the tray and PIGEON ONE off the park bench. ROBOT’S gage higher still with the arrival of the SEA GULL. PIGEON THREE and FOUR get up and rush back to the grain.

EXT. PIGEON ONE FINDS BOMB

Close up of PIGEON ONE picking itself up and sees under the bench a bomb. PIGEON ONE hops over to the front on the bench, looks up at ROBOT and see the gage get higher. PIGEON ONE understands that it’s a bomb. Cut to a close up of SEA GULL eating grain. Cut back to close up of PIGEON ONE with one of the bombs wire in his mouth, sweat on his brow. Cut to Mid shot of ROBOT’S gage getting higher. Back to close up of PIGEON ONE pulling the wire out. Back to close up of PIGEON THREE pecking. To PIGEON ONE opening his eye to see that the bomb hasn’t brown up. To ROBOT gage falling. Back to PIGEON ONE looking happy with itself. Cut to SEA GULL and PIGEON’S eating. Back to PIGEON ONE eating the fallen grain hopping away from the ROBOT.

FADE TO BLACK

Sound effect: Explosion.

EXT. ROBOT EXPLODES

Close up of PIGEON ONE who is stood stiffly, with big shocked eyes as feathers fall around it. Zoom out to long shot, there’s a scorch mark were the ROBOT once was.

As you can see the story has developed. I did this to make the story more exciting, with twists and turns.
